Gilligan's Island (DVD) Review

February 26th, 2010 by admin

Nominated for zero Emmys in its short three-season stint, Gilligan’s Island nonetheless has carved itself a notable niche in the television hall of fame. The brainchild of TV icon Sherwood Schwartz, longtime TV writer and creator of The Brady Bunch, Gilligan’s Island quickly gathered a strong cult following, reaching successive generations of fans via syndication following its cancellation and even spawning a cable TV reality show four decades later. An original CBS series, the show was shuffled between time slots (much like its contemporary program Star Trek), but later became more popular than ever in its syndicated reruns. With a memorable theme song the average viewer will find stuck in his head for days, Gilligan’s Island is classic family-friendly television entertainment the way it used to be…

Gilligan’s Island follows the adventures of a tour group of varying personalities whose boat, the SS Minnow, falls victim to a torrential rain storm during a three hour tour. Shipwrecked upon a deserted Pacific island, the seven guests and crew spend their days and nights trying to escape the island or be rescued by passersby. In addition to Gilligan (Bob Denver) who is the SS Minnow’s first mate, the island plays host to the Skipper (Alan Hale, Jr.), millionaire couple Thurston (Jim Backus) and Eunice Howell (Natalie Schafer), college professor Roy Hinkley (Russell Johnson), movie star Ginger Grant (Tina Louise), and Mary Ann Summers (Dawn Wells). Most every episode revolves around the group’s feeble attempts to escape the island, undertakings usually thwarted and foiled by Gilligan’s trademark buffoonery…

The Gilligan’s Island DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere “Two on a Raft” in which the cast is initially stranded on the island. Crafting a homemade raft, the Skipper and Gilligan set sail to find help. Along the way, they face dangerous sharks, the relentless sun, and hunger pains, until they eventually land on an island (not knowing it’s the very one they set sail from). But Gilligan and the Skipper think the island is inhabited by unfriendly natives, while the rest of the cast believes that Gilligan and the Skipper are unfriendly natives themselves… Other notable episodes from Season 1 include “So Sorry, My Island Now” in which Gilligan’s Island is captured by a Japanese Admiral who thinks World War II is still in full swing, and “My Fair Gilligan” in which Mr. Howell declares Gilligan his adopted son after Gilligan saves Mrs. Howell’s life…

Futurama (DVD) Review

February 23rd, 2010 by admin

A brainchild of Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Futurama launched itself into homes across the galaxy in Spring 1999. Employing the same quick wit and visual humor that has made The Simpsons one of the most successful shows in television history, Futurama (despite its early cancellation in August 2003) maintains its own loyal cult following…

Set one thousand years in the future, Futurama follows the life of a modern day American pizza delivery boy named Fry who finds himself reanimated 1,000 years after being accidentally cryogenically frozen. Brought back to life, Fry hunts down his great, great, great nephew – a tinkering scientist named Professor Farnsworth – and spends his days working for his distant relative’s intergalactic delivery service alongside good friends, Leela (a female Cyclops) and Bender (a morally-challenged robot). As the characters (usually Fry and Bender) engage in various schemes throughout the universe, Professor Farnsworth and his crew meet up with a number of interesting characters and civilizations…

The Futurama DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere in which Fry awakens following his 1,000 year cryogenic freeze. When a Cyclops named Leela tries to insert a career chip in him which will make him a delivery boy for life, Fry escapes, meets a robot named Bender, and the two eventually join Leela when she removes her own career chip. Together, they hunt down Fry’s closest relative (Professor Farnsworth) and become the crew of his space delivery service… Other notable episodes include “The Series Has Landed” in which Fry and the crew deliver their first package, and “My Three Suns” in which Fry becomes leader of a race of liquid aliens… Season 1 also features its own distinct alien language found on signs littered throughout the various episodes…

Frosty The Snowman (DVD) Review

February 19th, 2010 by admin

A gold member of the Christmas classic elite, Frosty The Snowman has entertained several generations of children and adults with its charming holiday magic. Jimmy Durante narrates this 1969 animated creation that features the birth of Frosty, a happy upbeat snowman brought to life by a magical hat. The story is based on the popular Christmas song of the same name, and Durante’s narration and singing brings the animation itself to life. One of the best holiday cartoon specials ever created, Frosty The Snowman will be a part of Christmas celebrations for years to come.

Frosty The Snowman follows the exploits of a group of school children trapped at school on Christmas Eve. Feeling guilty that her students are forced to attend class on Christmas Eve (with snow outside nonetheless), a schoolteacher hires a local magician named Professor Hinkle as entertainment. But Professor Hinkle is anything but a master of his trade. He entertains the kids only by means of their laughter as his ridiculous screw-ups. Frustrated by his failure to perform the famous magic trick of “pulling a rabbit out of a hat,” Hinkle hurls his old top hat out the window. But when the children are dismissed from class, the hat finds its way onto the head of a snowman named Frosty.

A gust of wind blows Professor Hinkle’s discarded hat onto the lifeless snowman’s head, and “presto”! …Frosty the snowman comes to life with a passionate bellow of “Happy Birthday”! Immediately, Professor Hinkle decides that he wants to keep his hat after all (so he can profit from its obvious magic powers), but the kids manage to fight off his advances in order to save Frosty. But Hinkle is the least of Frosty’s worries. The thermometer is on the rise, and the kids conclude that Frosty needs to get to the North Pole or else he’ll melt away. Together, they travel to the local train station to buy Frosty a ticket.
